Choice of version:

 There are LTS versions, reference, for a minimum duration of 18 months. These versions are tracked over this period of time and receive the expected updates and security patches. 
  There are versions maintained for a shorter period of time STS (Short Term Support or Support à Court Terme in French), allowing passage and familiarization to a new LTS version.
Joomla 2.5 is the last long-maintained version (LTS version). The next LTS version (3.5 version), is scheduled for release in January 2013.
