About SPIP

SPIP (« Publishing System for a Shared Internet ») is one of the oldest CMS available on the market and also one of the most popular. It is widely used in France by a large number of companies. You will find it in particular on:
  1. Like many other CMS, it has always been free (GNU GPL).
  2. Like many other CMS, it uses PHP and MySQL. It is rather easily installed in any hosting (standard shared hosting does the trick very well).
  3. Like some other CMS, SPIP has a simple template engine, ideal when starting from a model prepared by a graphic designer or an integrator (as opposed to systems such as Drupal, which offer many ready-made graphic components. job, but difficult to modify). It will however be necessary to appropriate the famous surlanguage of SPIP which one becomes familiar with relatively quickly (even beginners in programming if they know HTML and CSS well).
  4. Unlike most CMS tools, SPIP has an ergonomic, intuitive, light administration interface that adapts well to regular content publication.
It is especially for this last point that SPIP is used by many online newspapers or content sites.
However, SPIP has its detractors; it is true that it still suffers at 2 levels:
  • rights management is relatively limited (administrator or editor only)
  • the number of plug-ins available (see http://www.spip-contrib.net/ ) n is not as important as with its direct competitors
